He is the author of “Statistics in Corpus Linguistics” (CUP, 2018) and co-author of “Fundamental Principles of Corpus Linguistics” (CUP, 2022). He also designed a number of different tools for corpus analysis such as #LancsBox, BNClab, LancsLex and Lancaster Stats Tools online.
Abstract
The lecture offers an accessible introduction to statistics, which does not require any previous knowledge in this area. It starts with an informal definition of statistics as systematic learning from experience and offers a number of practical examples of statistical analysis of texts and corpora (bodies of texts) which will be of interest to students and researchers in the Humanities. Based on these examples, key statistical concepts and principles will be derived. The participants will learn a range of essential transferable skills, which they will be able to apply in the analysis of language in their own context.
